Breastmilk Lotion

While the benefits of breastmilk for babies' growth and immune systems is widely known, scientists, doctors, and mothers also know that breastmilk is extremely beneficial to babies' skin as well! There are hundreds to thousands of healing properties contained within the fats, vitamins, and nutrients contained within breastmilk.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) breastmilk contains:
- immunoglobulin A (IgA), a blood protein that contains infection-fighting bacteria
- palmitic acid, a super-moisturizer
- lauric acid, which doubles as a moisturizer and antibacterial agent
- oleic acid, which moisturizes the skin
- vaccenic acid, which protects and nourishes the skin
- linoleic acid, which lightens spots and reduces inflammation

According to a paper on the many benefits of breastmilk published in 2019 by Department of Biophysics and Human Physiology, Medical University of Warsaw, "breast milk is used in many cultures for skin irritations. Breast milk involves no risk of allergy, contains antibodies, epidermal growth factor (EGF), and erythropoietin, which may promote the growth and repair of skin cells. Human milk is a source of commensal bacteria that can play an anti-infectious, immunomodulatory role. Their possible function in the acceleration of conditions for skin biofilm formation can open new perspectives for the prevention and treatment of skin and wound healing diseases."

What ingredients do you use?

My recipe for breastmilk lotion is as follows:
- unrefined shea butter
- white beeswax
- vitamin E oil
- your breastmilk (at least 4 oz)
- organic essential oils of your choice (optional)

I do not add any preservatives to the lotion, however, breastmilk, beeswax, and vitamin E oil all contain natural preservatives that will help to extend the shelf life of your lotion, which is one month at room temperature or 3 months if stored in the refrigerator.

To ensure your lotion maintains it's quality, always wash your hands with warm water and soap before putting your hand in the container and store your container in a cool place away from direct sunlight.
